His grandfather, Farrukh Fateh, was one of the most famous qawwalis of Pakistan. Rahat was born into a Pakistani family of qawwals and classical musicians. They have three children together Rizwan, Zainab and Iqra. On 9 December 1974, he married Indian film actress Shabana Azmi. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lux Style Awards. In June 2007, he was conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiyaz, one of the highest civilian honours in Pakistan. Khan has been awarded numerous awards including the Pride of Performance, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiat, Tamgha-e-Imtiazi, and Pride of Performance. He went on to record several albums with him including the Grammy nominated Kuch Kar Dikhayengi (1988), which sold over 10 million copies worldwide. A few months later he joined the band of Pakistani pop singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In 1986 he performed at the World Music Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, and won the Golden Wreath Award for best newcomer. In 1982 he moved to Lahore, where he studied classical music under Pandit Omkar Nath Sharma. His father, Ghulam Haider Khan, was a musician himself and taught Rahat how to play sitar.
